Bali International Hospital: What Medical Tourists Should Know
Inside Sanur's new international-standard hospital: foreign physicians, advanced labs, imaging and sports medicine — and what it means for medical tourists.

A Genuinely New Piece of Infrastructure in Sanur
For decades, serious diagnostics in Bali meant a flight to Singapore or a long list of caveats. That calculus changed when a new international-standard hospital opened in Sanur in 2024, anchoring the health special economic zone the Indonesian government carved out on the island’s south-east coast.
We are not the hospital, and we want to be clear about that from the outset — we are a tour operator. But because our whole retreat depends on this facility existing, we have spent a great deal of time understanding what it can and cannot do. What follows is our honest read for anyone weighing a medical-tourism trip to Sanur.
What Makes It Different
Three things set this hospital apart from what was previously available on the island.
- Licensed to hire foreign physicians. It is, as we understand it, the first hospital in Indonesia permitted to employ international doctors directly. That matters for continuity of care and for guests who want to be seen by clinicians trained to standards they recognise.
- International lab and imaging partners. Bloodwork and pathology run through partnerships with established Singaporean and Australian laboratories, which brings a level of quality control that used to require leaving the country.
- Advanced diagnostic and sports-medicine capability. Modern imaging, cardiac testing, and a dedicated sports-medicine arm sit under one roof — the kind of setup that makes structured performance and longevity work realistic.
This concentration of capability is exactly what has turned the area into a credible destination, a shift we cover in more depth in our guide to Sanur as a wellness hub.
What Medical Tourists Can Actually Get Done
In practical terms, the hospital supports the kind of preventive and performance-oriented workup that international visitors increasingly travel for:
- Comprehensive check-ups spanning bloods, metabolic markers, and organ-system screening — the backbone of any serious visit, which we break down in our preventive health check-up guide.
- VO2 Max cardiopulmonary testing, the gold-standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness and a strong predictor of long-term health. We explain the science and what the numbers mean in our piece on VO2 Max testing and biological age.
- Cardiac screening, from resting ECG through to imaging where a physician deems it appropriate.
- Body composition and imaging for a fuller structural picture.
None of this is exotic by the standards of a major city hospital in Sydney or Singapore. What is genuinely new is having it available here, in a calm coastal town, at a fraction of the cost and wait of many Western systems.
The Honest Framing
We think it is important to be straight about who does what.
Every diagnostic test, every interpretation, and every clinical decision is made by the hospital’s own licensed physicians and its accredited laboratory partners. We do not perform, read, or comment on medical results. What we do is coordinate — scheduling, logistics, translation where needed, and building a two-week structure around your appointments so the medical work fits into a coherent experience rather than a stressful scramble of taxis and waiting rooms.
Put simply: the medicine is theirs; the itinerary, the recovery work, and the hospitality are ours. We think that separation is a feature, not a limitation. You get hospital-grade diagnostics without the trip becoming a purely clinical one.
How It Enables Our Retreat
Everything about our 14-day program rests on this hospital being here. A longevity retreat is only as good as the data underneath it — without real bloods, real imaging, and real cardiac testing, the rest is just a nice holiday with green juice.
Because the facility sits a short drive from where guests stay, the diagnostics slot naturally into the fortnight. You are not commuting across the island between appointments. Testing happens in the first days, the results shape the physician conversations, and the recovery, movement and nutrition work through the rest of the two weeks is built around what your own numbers actually show.
That proximity also shapes where we house guests. We chose our accommodation in Sanur precisely so that hospital visits are a brief, low-stress part of the day rather than the thing your holiday revolves around — close enough to be convenient, far enough to feel like you are genuinely away.
For anyone who has put off proper diagnostics because it meant a clinical, joyless trip somewhere far from home, Sanur now offers a real alternative: international-standard medicine, in a place you would actually want to spend two weeks.
This article is educational and not medical advice. All diagnostics referenced are performed by the licensed hospital and its accredited laboratory partners and interpreted by qualified physicians.
